REVIEW: Dairy Queen Choco Peanut Butter Brownie Blizzard (May 2013 Blizzard of the Month)

Following my first Dairy Queen review last month, I decided to continue the trend by picking up their Blizzard of the Month for May: the Choco Peanut Butter Brownie Blizzard Treat. Consisting of peanut butter topping, choco chunks and brownie pieces in vanilla soft serve, this version only slightly varies from the Choco Covered Pretzel with Peanut Butter Blizzard of last month. This drive-thru experience proved just as pleasant as the last and after only a few minutes I was holding a medium sized cup with plenty of chocolate mix-ins poking out the top. After seeing other Blizzard reviews across the net, I’m beginning to think my local Dairy Queen is better than most as far as presentation and taste are concerned.

My medium sized cup would have set me back 930 calories, which is only beat by the 1280 calories contained in the large serving. The 680 calories of the small and the 370 calories in the mini are much more manageable. Similar to last time, this vanilla soft serve has become infused with the peanut butter syrup during the mixing process. The peanut butter slightly overpowers the vanilla, but still provides a satisfactory foundation to feature the other ingredients. The soft-serve consistency allows the sugary, simple flavors to fully develop without the typical wait associated with something that has been sitting in the freezer for an extended period of time.

The high amount of chocolate chunks that have been blended with the base results in varying sized pieces in every bite. The larger pieces provide a crunch, while the smaller flecks add the rich taste of chocolate that contrasts against the peanut butter and vanilla hybrid base. This Blizzard’s final component came in the form of the brownie pieces that had replaced the choco covered pretzel pieces from last month’s version. These small squares are dense, chewy, burst with rich brownie flavoring and easily outshine all the other components. My particular medium-sized serving came jam packed from top to bottom.

Using such classic combinations like chocolate, vanilla and peanut butter may seem like a cop out when it comes to creativity, but that fails to negate the effectiveness of the flavors when combined in ice cream. The soft serve consistency of the ice cream, crunchiness of the chocolate and chewiness of the brownies are just something you can’t find in a freezer. Although it doesn’t surpass any of my super-premium favorites, both of my Blizzard experiences have been a nice change of pace.
