READER REVIEW: Steve's Review of Blue Bell Krazy Kookie Dough

I've been eating Blue Bell ice cream every Saturday night for a couple of years now, and I've always wanted to try this flavor, because I only eat 1/2 gallon tubs, and historically, Krazy Kookie Dough has only been available in the pint size. Until now! So as soon as I saw this in my local Winn Dixie freezer, I was all over it.

Peeling back the lid, Krazy Kookie Dough seems to match the label description of a cake batter ice cream loaded with sugar cookie dough pieces in bright shades of green, blue and pink. The cake batter base has a light-yellow appearance, and I did notice a smattering of what appeared to be cookie dough pieces. But, since these pieces were not numerous, the appearance was not very impressive. However, past experience with other Blue Bell flavors had me hopeful that as I scooped into the tub, more of these pieces would appear.

And was I ever not disappointed! It didn't take much digging to realize that Blue Bell had backed up their claim that this ice cream is "loaded" with the cookie dough pieces. Soon enough, the cake batter was swimming in brightly-colored dough. Even better, calling them "pieces" does not do the cookie dough justice, as these are better characterized as the generously-sized chunks.

Taste-wise, Krazy Kookie Dough is a children's concoction. The cake batter base has a mild lemon tang to it, but mostly it is very sweet and otherwise bland, and its texture is more flaky rather than rich and creamy. I could not seem myself enjoying an ice cream made solely of this cake batter. Similarly, the cookie dough chunks are light and sweet rather than moist and chewy. To my palate, the color of the dough chunks was strictly aesthetic, they all tasted the same regardless of color. So this ice cream is a treat best enjoyed when one is in the mood for a sugar-rush, think cotton candy. That said, I enjoyed Krazy Kookie Dough very much. The dough chunks were evident in such abundance that they provided a tasty mouthful despite the blandness of the base.
