REVIEW: Breyer's Blasts M&M's Chocolate Candies

The absolute worst ice cream I've ever reviewed had a similar looking logo on the front of the carton. The Mars made, Chocolate Ice Cream with M&M's Chocolate Candies had been nearly inedible, so it makes sense that this major candy manufacturer would want to join forces with a professional when it came trying their hand at ice cream again. As part of the bargaining, Mars managed to influence Breyer's to swap out their frozen dairy dessert for a light ice cream instead. Hopefully this similar combination of chocolate light ice cream with M&M's minis milk chocolate candies can outperform their previous attempt.

At only 140 calories, I remained skeptical that the light ice cream wasn't actually the same frozen dairy dessert used in their other Breyer's Blasts flavors, but after scooping some into a bowl, this lacks the same squishy consistency. Now that the base doesn't share the same odd pliability of frozen dairy dessert, the density is comparable to many of the ice creams from Blue Bunny or Edy's. Even though the consistency is improved upon, the dry, somewhat crumbly texture holds this flavor from reaching its full potential. The mild chocolate taste lacks the richness of many chocolate ice creams available, and without a fudge swirl to enhance the base, comes up a little short overall.

In an attempt to make up for the fact they've used a bland chocolate ice cream, Breyer's has included enough M&M's minis chocolate candies to ensure that every bite comes equipped with at least a few. These small buttons of candy are easily crushed and release the familiar taste of M&M's soon after. Although the chocolate light ice cream in the Breyer's Blasts version outshines the real chocolate ice cream used in their previously attempted flavor, this simple combination can't even manage to outperform other flavors within in its own lineup.
