READER REVIEW: Alex's Review and Head-to-Head Comparison of Ben & Jerry's Fair Trade Chubby Hubby

One of our readers recently had the opportunity to closely examine not only the classic Ben & Jerry's Chubby Hubby, but also their new, slightly-revised Fair Trade version. Here's his reader review:

First off, if you notice the pints side by side it looks exactly the same except the Fair Trade logo is now on it and the pretzel description has slightly changed. The old version reads fudge covered peanut butter filled pretzels in vanilla malt ice cream with fudge & peanut buttery swirls, while the new Fair Trade version uses a vanilla malt ice cream with peanutty fudge covered pretzels with fudge & peanut buttery swirls.

I began with the original version first, which came chock full of pretzels. There was even one poking out of the top of the carton after removing the lid. Chubby Hubby is a flavor I haven’t had in a while, so I was looking forward to this comparison. My first bite contained a bit of pretzel, fudge and peanut butter swirl, and some of the vanilla malt ice cream. The combination compliments each other nicely. On the down side, the pretzel was only slightly crunch due to being so thin and the only peanut butter flavor I got came mostly from the swirl, not the pretzel. Although I did enjoy this, I probably won’t be revisiting it anytime soon.

I then tried the Fair Trade version. From the top it looks pretty much the same as the original, but has a bit more of the swirl on the first layer. Upon first look, even the pretzels appear the same. I sampled one by itself and the peanut butter ends up begin very subtle and an undertone within the chocolate. It also provides a much crunchier texture and essentially feels like chocolate covered pretzel pieces. The base and swirls are just as the good as the original Chubby Hubby and appear unchanged. In my opinion, I prefer the new pretzels to the old. I get much more of the peanut butter flavor from the pretzel even if it is blended with the chocolate coating and provides a nice contrast against the sweet, base ice cream. I’ll definitely be revisiting this new, Fair Trade version in the future.
