REVIEW: Haagen Dazs Banana Split (Limited Edition)
While perusing the ice cream aisle at our local Walmart, we ran across a new limited edition flavor from Haagen Dazs. Despite the fact that not too long ago, Banana Split was a part of the standard US flavor rotation, they’ve rebranded this creation in a purple limited edition pint with the following description written on the side, “A delightful time-honored dessert, our Banana Split Ice cream starts with whipped cream ice cream and banana ice cream folded into ribbons of rich fudge and tangy sweet strawberry and cherry pieces to create this perfect ice cream blend — a decadently wonderful escape!"
Since we didn’t take advantage of this flavor when it was in the standard carton, we decided to further investigate what this latest limited edition had to offer. With the lid removed and seal peeled off, the first layer shows plenty of signs of activity underneath the surface. In fact, just one pull from our spoon across the first layer unleashed a lot of the aforementioned chocolaty fudge.
The banana base is just as a super-premium banana ice cream should be: smooth, creamy, aromatic and a suitable foundation to build upon. The whipped cream gets lost a bit in the mix, but does add a bit of its own flavoring to the banana. The strawberry and cherry bits are kept small, soft, and add some authenticity to this classic. To finish things off, Haagen Dazs drizzles in a bit of their rich, chocolate swirl to impersonate the fudge sauce usually seen on a Banana Split. If you enjoy banana ice creams, you’ll want to give this one a go, but they’ll need to do more than give an old flavor a facelift to get an A from us.
