After someone started the discussion of
Weird and Wonderful Ice Cream Flavors over on our new ICI Forums, I’ve had my eye open for something to add to the thread. While this may fit into the weird category, I’m not so sure about the wonderful. Sparky’s Homemade Ice Cream in Columbus, Missouri, has taken in on the task of infusing one of their flavors with one of the most annoying insects known to man, the cicada. Even though these nuisances live most of their lives underground, every 13-17 years or so, they make their way to the surface, break out of their exoskeleton, and wreak havoc on anyone’s ear buds nearby. According to the Columbia Missourian, “
To make the ice cream, Sparky's employees collected cicadas from their backyards and brought them in to work on Wednesday. The cicadas are fully cooked through boiling, then covered in brown sugar and milk chocolate. The base ice cream is a brown sugar and butter flavor.” If you were interested in trying the flavor, that’s too bad. The first batch was sold out before it was even placed in the display case. If you live near Sparky’s, a Reader Review of their Cicada Ice Cream would be incredible.
