REVIEW: Häagen-Dazs Spiced Caramel Biscuit (Limited Edition)

After experiencing a few other limited edition flavors from Haagen Dazs, it doesn’t take much more than seeing that bright purple pint to win me over. This particular pint had received some high marks from some of my other ice cream enthusiasts, so purchasing Spiced Caramel Biscuit was a no-brainer. My Southern heritage inhibits me from ever being able to refer to a cookie as a biscuit. Biscuits are supposed to be fluffy, flaky, big, buttery and enjoyed best when smothered in gravy, but Haagen Dazs brings some European flair to the concept.

According to the back of the carton for this 290 calories per serving, super premium ice cream, “For centuries, Belgian and Dutch bakers have perfected their traditional speculoos: crisp, buttery, sweetly spiced biscuits. This classic confection inspired our Spiced Caramel Biscuit Ice Cream, which crumbles sugary, crunchy, cinnamon-sparked biscuit pieces into rich, velvety caramel ice cream – a new take on a Old World recipe.” Just as the offerings from Haagen Dazs do, this one requires not only removal of the lid, but also peeling back the plastic seal before seeing the first layer. Although there doesn’t seem to be any larger sized mix-ins, there are enough of these small sugary biscuits to make their way into every bite.

The caramel ice cream used by Haagen Dazs in this flavor is used in a few other flavors and brings about the same high-butterfat, slow to melt consistency we’re accustomed to seeing from this company. The taste is smooth, simple, sweet and should provide the perfect foundation for the cookies to come. These seemingly small pieces of speculoos grow much larger after breaking through the first layer. These so-called biscuits had varied from bite to bite, but brought about characteristics of chewy, cinnamon gingerbread and hints of crunchy biscotti. Add Spiced Caramel Biscuit to the ever-growing list of above average flavors from Haagen Dazs.
