READER REVIEW: Arjun's Review of Perry's Cookie Dough

Since there are not too many Perry’s reviews on this site, an introduction to the company is in order: Perry’s was founded in Akron, NY in 1918 and is a mainstay in the upstate area. Their ice creams cover the gamut from classics and standards to novelty flavors that celebrate the Buffalo Bills, Sabres, and Panda Paws. The company seems to stick to a small regional radius, covering 30 counties.

As it is my favorite flavor, I compare companies through their cookie dough offerings. The box promises “cookie dough ice cream with loads of cookie dough pieces and chocolate chips.” At 170 calories per half cup serving, it falls in line with the majority of Perry’s ice creams. This particular cookie dough differs from its competitors by utilizing a cookie dough ice cream base instead of a vanilla one. The cookie dough pieces are the sterling quality of this flavor. Each individual piece is gooey and contains the perfect amount of sweet. Combined with the chocolate chips, they deliver on the mix-in flavor enhancement. By themselves, the cookie dough pieces are superior to the ones found in Edy’s and Turkey Hill’s cookie dough offerings. However, the flavor is held back overall by the seemingly creative ice cream base. Perry’s would have been better off with a regular or French vanilla base (both of which they do very well). If they had nailed the cookie dough base, this flavor would be dynamite, but it is not to be.

I encountered an issue with the surface ice cream melting a tad too easily. The rest of the carton was preserved, but my brother and I found a soupy quality to the surface that was slightly off-putting.

Perry’s has many creative and standard offerings that are worth trying if you are ever in Perry’s region. Cookie dough incorporates some of the company’s creativity, but the real hit is those cookie dough pieces.
