READER REVIEW: Arjun's Review of Edy's Slow Churned Cookie Dough
Cookie Dough is a fan favorite of ice cream enthusiasts and a standard flavor in the ice cream rotation that any company should seek to master. It is the barometer for how I measure a maker, so I expect great things from the flavor. This is the Slow-Churned version, coming in at 130 calories per ½ cup serving. There is a full Grand version, which I have not yet tasted. Edy’s website promises creamy vanilla light ice cream loaded with cookie dough pieces and chocolately chips.
The first pitfall to avoid with lighter ice creams is to make sure that the base is not gummy and artificial. That is checked off immediately. Both from appearance and taste, there is no gumminess to combat. It is problematic in some of Edy’s offerings, but the base passes the test here and it delivers on the creamy vanilla light ice cream that it promises. It is not brimming with cream flavor or texture, but it is slightly thicker than the classic vanilla flavor.
The cookie dough pieces are abundant and most importantly, they are a beautiful mix of crunchy and chewy. All of them are fairly uniform in size and leave a pleasant taste in your mouth, which is easily the highlight of the flavor. The chocolate chips are nowhere as impressive as the cookie dough pieces, but they do not detract from the pieces nor the base. They actually add an enjoyable crunch and third flavor that accompanies each well-rounded scoop.
There are Edy’s flavors you should always avoid, but do not be thrown off by the light label of Slow-Churned. This is up there as one of the company’s best offerings along with French Vanilla and Cinnamon Bun Fun! This is probably as close to an A as this outfit can garner.
