REVIEW: Ben & Jerry's Cheesecake Brownie
After finally realizing my infatuation with cheesecake ice creams, this carton of Cheesecake Brownie was the last flavor standing between me and conquering all of them from Ben & Jerry’s. All of their other cheesecake-inspired offerings had gotten my seal of approval and considering this one features brownies, I thought this would have no problem passing go as well. The description of the front of the pint classifies this as cheesecake ice cream with cheesecake brownie chunks. This particular flavor used to be referred to as One Cheesecake Brownie and aided the movement to abolish poverty, but it seems they’ve abandoned the movement by rebranding this one.
Underneath the lid of this super premium pint that contains 250 calories per serving, I find an awfully plain looking layer of white ice cream with only a few pieces of brownie poking through the top. The consistency of the cheesecake ice cream was dense and took a while to melt down enough to be scooped out easily. Unlike it’s fruity family, there’s no vitamin rich ruckus to get in the way of this full blown cheesecake base. The creamy, richness of the cheesecake can finally stand on its own, but unfortunately it starts to become borderline bland the more bites I take. Hopefully the cheesecake brownie bites can save the day.
My initial excitement for unearthing another Ben & Jerry’s flavor featuring brownies was quickly extinguished upon discovering that these weren't the brownies from Greyston Bakery. Instead, tons of these tiny, sugar cube sized morsels are mashed in between the layers of cheesecake ice cream. Ben & Jerry's rarely includes any mix-in that warrants the adjective tiny, but that's certainly how I would describe these chunks of cheesecake. I wanted an offering of brownies, maybe even a chocolate cookie swirl, but instead I just got layer upon layer of mediocrity. It wasn't necessarily bad, and if you're a cheesecake lover like myself, you'll still enjoy this, but it could have been much improved with a few small adjustments. Bigger and bolder is better with Ben & Jerry's, but they seem to have forgot what they were built on.
