REVIEW: Coolhaus Louis Ba-Kahn
In our corner of North Carolina, we've started to gain access to many of the Coolhaus prepackaged products in specialty markets like Earth Fare, The Fresh Market and most recently, Green Life Grocery. Not only had we found a new place that offered Coolhaus sammies, but they also offered a flavor we'd been on the lookout for but hadn't been able to find: Louis Ba-Kahn. To make this one they take two chocolate chip cookies and sandwich them around an intriguing blend of brown butter candied bacon ice cream.
We've had unpleasant experiences with bacon flavored ice creams in the past, but we aren't opposed to adding in a little pork when done well. Along with milk, heavy cream, sugar, brown sugar, salted butter, and cinnamon, Coolhaus also blends in a bit of Pederson's bacon. The two chocolate chip cookies are soft, chewy and just as good as some of the others we've tried in the past from Coolhaus, but the brown butter candied bacon ice cream was really what we were looking at in this one. To our delight, the light colored base incorporated the ideal amount of rich, salty flavoring to contrast against the sweet, buttery ice cream. The result was a sugary and savory combination that used a pork product in the place of something like sea salt that we'd be accustomed to seeing. Coolhaus gets an A for the creativity and balancing of flavors in this one. Louis Ba-Kahn is certainly worth checking out if you're an adventurous eater.
