REVIEW: Trader Joe's S'mores Ice Cream Sandwiches
Sometime last month my small, but slowly expanding, hometown of Asheville, NC was graced with the presence of its first Trader Joe's location. I'd been meaning to swing by to pick up few things and browse their ice cream selection, but once I received a recommendation from one of my readers to try out their S'mores frozen sandwiches, I finally made the trip across town. Each box comes with four of these small, circular, individually wrapped sandwiches that Trader Joe's describes as graham crackers with marshmallow-chocolate swirl gelato and milk chocolate flakes.
These come in at 250 calories each, which is pretty consistent with many of the other novelty sandwiches and bars I've had. Unlike a real s'mores, Trader Joe's frozen versions utilize two super-soft, graham cracker cookies that offer little resistance to teeth before breaking through to the gelato stuffed in between. They offer all the taste of a graham cracker, but none of the crunch. The marshmallow-chocolate swirl gelato feels to be on the lighter side and melts down rather quickly. The chocolate is mostly drowned out by the sugary, marshmallow flavoring, but the small chocolate flakes help balance everything back out and provide an accurate frozen representation of the classic s'mores sandwich. While these didn't quite have what it took to earn an A, they were still well above average.
